Back-to-back victories, home and now away. And all in the space of a week. Is this that corner finally turned?
With Alf and all the local hacks busy writing obituaries and arranging for the Priest to pop round to administer the last rites, Ipswich Town finished off a cracking week at the office with a last-minute win at Coventry.
Having played a West Ham side with delusions of grandeur off the park, Town saw off a poor Coventry side whose station in life looks pretty precarious. Wins home and away against two sides at the opposite ends of the table is not to be sniffed at, as Alf’s finest finally appear to be turning that all-illusive corner.
The hymn ‘Your grounds too big for you…’ was probably composed with the Ricoh Arena in mind. With Alf counting empty seats Town took to the field unchanged from their midweek triumph.
With a healthy following of over a thousand Town fans to subsidise the lost souls of Coventry and with the taste of snow in the air, the boys started off on the front foot and had the home-side running for cover.
And with Lee Martin and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas once again showing what a dangerous double-act they can be cutting in from all corners of the park, Town slipped effortlessly into the driving seat.
Town took a deserved lead on 23 minutes after the home side failed to clear their lines. Emmanuel-Thomas at last in a rich vein of form blasted home. Clearly the ‘Jet’ from Forest Gate doesn’t do tap-ins.
Having taken the lead, old habits die hard.
With Senegalese Sonko looking like Bambi on ice in the wintry conditions, Town were soon hauled back when the African hand-balled in the area and Clingan dispatched the spot-kick.
That put much-needed fire in the bellies of the Sky Blues and with the impressive Deegan pulling strings, Town were soon pedalling backwards.
And it was the tricky Irishman Deegan who fired the home-side ahead deep into first-half injury time. It was a kick in the teeth for the visiting faithful, but not entirely a novelty.
Come the second-half and once again Town were first out of the traps. With Drury and Hyam again proving pivotal in the revival of the Blue’s fortunes playing simple passes to the wide boys quickly.
Murphy again showed he has more strings to his bow and why he’s managing to keep young Carson out of the side.
Both Chopra and Sonko missed decent chances as Town seemed destined to be frustrated and thwarted even against such limited opposition.
But just when Alf and the faithful were thinking of accepting their lot, Lee Martin won a fairly soft penalty. Alf for one wasn’t going to argue.
Martin stepped up to see Murphy in the home goal divert his kick onto the bar. Fortunately Chopra was alert to anything that moved in the box and headed into an empty net.
With Town level, and the locals miffed at the award of a soft penalty, the Coventry fans appealed for anything inside the area and with Sonko decidedly uncomfortable without snow tyres on, it was a nervous time for the visitors.
And with Town looking the likelier winners, having missed chances Andy Drury whipped in a pin-point cross for Chopra to fire Town ahead, deep into added time. That sent the travelling thousand into ecstasy, having seen their charges snatch defeat at the hands of victory on so many occasions.
Alf always knew there were goals in this side. With Jewel drawing a centre-half blank in the window, a decent loan stopper is still a must.
