Reasons to be optimistic but Town have missed a great opportunity this season

May 5th, 2008 by theexpert | Comments Off

Ipswich negotiated their part of the equation perfectly, but there was no outside help whatsoever and therefore finished in eighth position just one point outside the play-offs. It was pretty much a faultless display on a day that as always was high in tension.

There was as close to a full house as you can get with the Town supporters decked out in their blue and white which gave a tremendous back drop to the occasion. They were in full voice as well, so with the combination of the …

Why would your average Championship footballer want to win promotion?

May 1st, 2008 by markarmstrong | Comments Off

It may seem like a ridiculous question but hear me out?

What exactly is the motivation for a player in the Championship to gain promotion to the Premier League?

Yes, most have got clauses in their contracts stipulating a significant pay rise should they reach the Promised Land but if they don't make the grade (and most don't) then they're likely to be out of the club quicker than you can say Steve Howard.

Surely promotion can be one of the worst …

There's only really one question to discuss. Are Town going to make the play-offs?

May 1st, 2008 by podcast | Comments Off

The MFW panel get together to discuss all of Sunday's permutations but of course the Expert and the Alfs will not be restricted to just one topic.

Owen Garvan's development, Jon Walters' comeback and Jim's summer transfer target are all mulled over a pint at the Crown Hotel in Framlingham.

Give it a whirl…

Cast aside your moans and groans and get ready to raise the roof against Tigers

April 29th, 2008 | Comments Off

The odds on whether 'The Final Countdown' will be blasted over the Tannoy system at Portman Road in the build-up to Sunday's make-or-break clash with Hull are short.

Given that that the probability is stacked against Ipswich securing a play-off berth come 4pm on the Sabbath day, it would be more suitable to belt out Bon Jovi's classic 'Living On a Prayer'.

Calling on divine intervention or help from above might seem a little extreme. But …

What would have happened to Town's season had the Evans takeover not taken place?

April 24th, 2008 by markarmstrong | Comments Off

Ever wondered what might have happened this season if Marcus Evans had not come along?

Would Town be going to Deepdale this weekend desperately searching for a win to keep their slim play-off hopes alive or would the Blues' promotion charge dwindled long before now?

When the reclusive millionaire officially completed his takeover of the club in December it gave manager Jim Magilton the green light to go on a spending spree ? the like of which the club had not embarked …

Close your eyes and keep your fingers firmly crossed, it's going to be close…

April 18th, 2008 by johnwark | Comments Off

I'm not even going to try to predict how the Championship table will look come May 4, when the last round of games takes place.

Somebody told me the other day that only one team, Burnley, had nothing left to play for this season.

I'm not saying I didn't believe him, but I wasn't 100 per cent convinced either and decided to check. Guess what? He was spot-on mathematically speaking, all the teams above Burnley could still win promotion while those below …

Football is a numbers game. And Jim got his numbers spot on…

April 15th, 2008 by theexpert | Comments Off

Ipswich kicked off. Norwich hustled the ball back to the Town goalkeeper. Stephen Bywater instead of dispatching the ball down the pitch to put Norwich on the back foot sliced it into the crowd. For the next four minutes, The Town couldn't work the ball out of their half, as Norwich set the pace, keeping good possession and dominating these early moments.

Tommy Miller, the Ipswich central midfielder, was rushed into giving the ball away to Ched Evans about 25 yards from the …

What's the general mood going into Sunday's East Anglian derby? The MFW panel discuss

April 10th, 2008 by podcast | Comments Off

Chief Reporter Mark Armstrong chairs another MFW podcast as he asks the Alfs and The Expert just where Town's season lies with four games to go.

The MFW panel found reasons to be cheerful after conducting their own post-mortem of the 1-1 draw against Cardiff but all were unanimous in saying anything less than three points against Norwich City would rule Town out of the play-offs.

Other items up for discussion were the contract situations of both Jason De Vos …

Town's invitation to the end of season prize giving appears to be lost in the post

April 10th, 2008 by theexpert | Comments Off

We are well into the sharp end of the season when the candidates for the prize giving are being sorted out.

But after last night's result, and more importantly the lack of performance and desire of many of the Town team, it is looking more and more likely that there won't be any invitations sent to Portman Road.

Jim Magilton wasn't alone in the criticism of his team at Colchester last Saturday and so he couldn't be blamed for making changes for the visit …

Two derbies in a week? Seriously? Well it's going to define the Blues' season

April 4th, 2008 by stevemellen | Comments Off

Welcome to East Anglia, where we settle disputes among ourselves. This promotion/relegation is a local matter, for local football clubs.

At least that's the way it looks this week. It's time for a little Russian roulette, with three players and some serious consequences. To get where we're going to, Ipswich are going to have to clamber over both of our near neighbours and their supporters. Are you ready to become very unpopular?

Around a month ago the fixture …
